Bathing in an icy cool lake high on the mountains on hot summer days: this refreshing pleasure is a pleasure that you like to treat yourself to on a hike today. In the past, however, people rarely bathed – and certainly not in a mountain lake. Anyone who handled it differently was considered foolish. This is what happened to the Poschiavoan who occasionally took a dip in one of the mountain lakes of Val dal Saient in summer. From then on, the water was called «Lagh dal Mat» (Lake of the Madman).
The lake can be reached from Alp Pescia Bassa, after climbing past Lagh da la Regina and some tiny, nameless souls. Later, the circular route leads to the Col d'Anzana. It is worthwhile to take a few steps across the border here to take a deep look into the Valtellina at the rock slabs on the edge of the pastureland. By the way, the footpaths in this area are visibly more comfortable than in the area of the mountain lakes. This is because the route was used as a smuggling route until the 1980s.
